Kifaru And Mora

One of those Kit Tart's 'gear shots' we like so much. Sad isn't it.

I saw this sentiment on a forum the other day and thought that sometimes sitting in front of the laptop chatting with other kit tarts actually does do some good, and of course it enabled me to bask in the smug glow of I-told-you-so.

"When I first got into bushcraft I bought a £300 knife and had a £50 pack, now I've got a £300 pack and £10 knife"

If this doesn't make sense to you, perhaps best not stray too far from the car.

More sad kit-tartism and occasional outbursts of yer actual kit-usage to follow

PS I also saw this one "Please, no bad mouthing the next guy's pack, it's like badmouthing his GF. I'm sure it's perfectly fine, unless you have to carry it."

Isn't it funny how such an inexpensive knife can be so amazing. I have spoken with a few people who are just getting started and they all think that more expensive is better. I just smile and let them know that all of the "survival/primitive skills" people swear by the Moras. Then, the buy their very expensive knife anyway. I have buying the Moras a box of 10 at a time, but they don't break ... so everyone in the family has at least two (including my 8, 10, and 13 years old daughters).

It's frankly hilarious, but I can complain as I've done so well out of them. I really rate knife forums as the place to buy outdoor kit, lots of the guys have everything under the sun, then the passion grips them, they 'have to have' some new blade that's an arm and a leg so they panic sell off their unused kit at bargain prices. Bless 'em.

I paid a hell of a lot of money for that pack - but i 'only' paid a third of what it would have cost me from kifaru. I justify it by telling myself its better made than the last one and I had that for 28 years.

Just before i saw your comment I saw this excellent quote

"There's no bore like a knife bore." Raymond Mears

I hear you on the knife thing... I've got plenty and generally rely on a Mora or a Spyderco folder for nearly everything.

Beautiful knives are wonderful to look...but give me a $10 Mora if something needs done.

I feel kind of odd about my spyderco, i love the design, the steel is awesome -takes a wicked edge and holds it- but it's such a lot of cash to have wrapped up in a knife that doesn't do anything (apart from fold shut) that a mora can't do.
