While noodling about on 'tinerweb this morning I discovered that Lawrence Precision, who are famous for their titanium moderators also make this 2.3 Kg mountain rifle.
From Titanium. Drool.
In order to create a unique Rifle, we have started from the ground up. Using our own unique super light receiver, built from High Strength Aerospace Grade Titanium, our super strong lightweight Carbon fibre stock, Match grade barrel and trigger, we have created an ultra light and accurate rifle.
Proven reliability and performance, weighing a mere 2.3 KG*
When incorporated with our Titanium Sound Moderators and Scope Mounts, this produces a unique ultra light winning combination.
Mr Lawrence only makes Short Actions, and suggests;
.243 Win [aka 6mm08]
6.5 Creedmoor
7mm08
I've also seen a .308, for me its the magic of the 6-7mm range. With such a light rifle I'm veering towards the .243 BUT at 100gr it's at the top of its bullet weight range, whereas the other two are at the bottom of their's. Obviously there are lots of other factors to be considered. What would you choose and why?

I've been really happy with the 7-08 lately. In an ultralight rifle with a moderator to tame a little recoil I can't find any reason to go with a .243 or a 6.5mm.
ReplyDeleteThe 7-08 with 140gr bullets is capable just about any quadruped on earth. It's worked great on caribou and I'd have no hesitation on moose.

ReplyDeleteits quite the round isn't it, my friend i stalked with at the beginning of the year used 120's to great effect, earlier today I saw 195's for enraged Trex presumably.

08 unless a shorter round is available

ReplyDeleteJust a nice rifle to have for a great hunting for dears
ReplyDeleteVery informative and useful post. I want to know more about rifles, especially some for hunting in the wild for beginner. Could you please suggest me some of them or some website that I can find information about them. I did google them but actually with a beginner, I don't know the key words to look for.
ReplyDeleteThe rife is such a small part of the hunting picture. Although I really like the idea of a super light rifle. I also understand that it is much cheaper for me to work out 3-4lbs off my bodyweight then to fork out the money for a rifle that is 3-4 lbs lighter. When we start talking about rifles this light then as you noted we begin to move towards lighter cartridges. Although a 7mm-08 is alright, I would consider it to be on the light end for mountain elk hunting.
