Wild Boar Hunting: A Bit Close For Comfort?

Once he starts paying attention, he really gets it together.
I wonder if he'd worn the Kepi Blanc?

  1. Wow, that is a rather dynamic situation to be constantly tracking shot placement and the safety of one's backstop. I'd be a bit pissed if I was the camera guy who was suddenly downrange.

Its the bit where he stumbles pointing gun-first towards the his mate that's scary at least the camera guy have a couple of feet of boar between him and the muzzle .

  3. France ended the 2012 hunting season with ended with a total of 21 dead hunters from shooting related accidents.

    You can see why now.

  4. Interesting stat, highly plausible too fro the way they carry on over there.

It'll be interesting to see what it takes for the french to change their ways. France has seen the most successful sea change in attitudes to motoring and the biggest reduction in road deaths, so they can change - when compelled to do so!

Could I ask where you found the stat, and if there were any numbers for negligent discharge, wounding ect?

  5. The stats came direct from Charlie Jacoby on Fieldsports TV. They had a news report on the subject of French boar hunting just a week or so ago.

I believe Charlie obtained the figures from the French National Office of Hunting and Wildlife.

IIRC the Italians suffer an even higher number of fatalities.
A few years ago a young man who had camped out on the eve of the boar hunting season was shot dead whilst asleep in his sleeping bag by a hunter who mistook the humped mass lying under some bushes as a feeding boar.

  6. Hi,
I am a French hunter and I stumbled upon your conversation.
It’s true that during the 2012-2013 there were many more accidents than in previous years.
But we are trying to change this with more efficient training to pass the hunting license!
For instance hunters under the age of 40, who have all taken the hunting license with the practical test (since 2003), have caused less accidents than older hunters who didn’t have the same training.
Hopefully we will see improvements soon.

In case any of you are interested, I also have a YouTube channel (I hunt wild boar, deer, fox, badger, birds…): http://www.youtube.com/user/WildFrenchHunter

  7. My pleasure.

If my memory is correct for the 2010/2011 hunting season the Italian figures were somewhere in the region of 70.But this included deaths from all sorts of occurrences such as falls, drownings, heart attacks, arterial bleeding as well as the usual suspects i.e being shot by a rifle or a shotgun.

That's not as bad as I'd have expected. Years ago i read that most american hunting fatalities were heart attacks and then falling from treestands. Hunting here is pretty safe especially in comparison to building sites and that known killer Novelty Slippers, really you'll know if someone is trying to get rid of you if they buy you a pair for crimbo, those big fluffy Garfields have taken more scalps than even the .303

  10. Construction site fatalities rates are now very low. Thanks mainly to the strict imposition of H&S rules and procedures. I am old enough to remember the free for all fatality rates that were suffered in the 70's. When it was perfectly normal to suffer 1-3 deaths per week

I'll have to take your word on the novelty slipper accident rates. Who or what is a Garfield?

Please feel free to leave comments. I really enjoy hearing what readers think. The rules are the same as round my dinner table:

You're welcome to disagree, life would be way too boring if we all agreed with each other and we'd never learn anything.
I like to think that we're all grown up enough to argue every last point, right down to the bone, without bearing a grudge afterwards.

Come on in the waters lovely
