Potted Shrimps

Gawblimey I've been way busy these last three weeks, my refurb project is going well but I'm sorry to say blogging has taken a bit of a back seat of late.

The good news is that by the end I'll have squirreled away a few coins and I promise to buy more stuff to review and maybe even have a wildfood adventure to tell you all about.

In the meantime I was lucky enough to receive a pot of potted shrimps from MoB who have just been to the lakes. Delicious!

Here's James Martin's recipe from the BBC

Ingredients
110g/4oz butter
good pinch of cayenne pepper
good pinch of ground nutmeg
570ml/1 pint picked shrimps
seasoning

Method
1. Place the butter in a pan to melt with the pepper and nutmeg. Once melted, add the shrimps. Stir well over the heat and season.
2. Place the shrimps into little pots or ramekin dishes and press down.
3. Top with the remaining butter left in the bottom of the pan and chill in the fridge.
4. Serve with watercress, a lemon wedge and a couple of slices of brown bread.

Hope you're all well

  1. OK, I gotta ask, and if my Okie provincialism shows I apologize, but what the hell are potted shrimps?

One day, when you're bored at home, you could do a lot worse than invest a few minutes, and master the delicious art of potting. Basically its setting cooked meats or fish in flavored butter. Yummy.

Always eaten on hot toast, proper old school, proper northern.

  3. You know something...

I remember reading about that waaay back in The Swiss Family Robinson. They shot doves or quail and after cooking them they stored them in butter.

Always kept that in the back of my mind. Now I have a new idea to pursue... Hey we could use stuff like that on the Mongol Rally

    Best regards,

  4. all there is to potting is sticking stuff in butter?(!) I guess you really do learn something new everyday.

  5. Hey, this sounds like the rillettes Hank makes... Except he uses yummy goose fat or lard.

SBW, when are you coming out to Cali to come have a wildlife adventure with us?

You need to purge the snails before you cook them. i put them in a plastic box with a lid with holes in it and feed them on white bread for a couple of days, or until their shit is white and the grit and stuff is purged from their digestive tract.

Please feel free to leave comments. I really enjoy hearing what readers think. The rules are the same as round my dinner table:

You're welcome to disagree, life would be way too boring if we all agreed with each other and we'd never learn anything.
I like to think that we're all grown up enough to argue every last point, right down to the bone, without bearing a grudge afterwards.

Come on in the waters lovely
