A tubby suburban dad watching hunting and adventure shows on TV and wondering could I do that? This is the chronicle of my adventures as I learn to learn to Forage, Hunt and Fish for food that has lived as I would wish to myself - Wild and Free.

Wood That I Could
I cant remember where I saw this, but I liked it and thought you might too.
Beechwood fires are bright and clear
If the logs are kept a year.
Chestnut's only good, they say
If for long it's laid away.
But Ash wood new or Ash wood old
Is fit for a queen with a crown of gold.
Birch and Fir logs burn too fast,
Blaze up bright and do not last.
It is by the Irish said.
That Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread
Elm wood burns like churchyard mold;
Even the very flames are cold.
But Ash wood green or Ash wood brown,
Is fit for a queen with a golden crown.
Poplar gives a bitter smoke,
Fills your eyes and makes you choke.
Applewood will scent your room
With an incense-like perfume.
Oak and Maple, if dry and old,
Keep away the winter cold.
But Ash wood wet and Ash wood dry,
A king shall warm his slippers by.

Please feel free to leave comments. I really enjoy hearing what readers think. The rules are the same as round my dinner table:
You're welcome to disagree, life would be way too boring if we all agreed with each other and we'd never learn anything.
I like to think that we're all grown up enough to argue every last point, right down to the bone, without bearing a grudge afterwards.
Come on in the waters lovely

Ash trees are quite common in my neck of the woods and do burn reasonably well even when green. If you purchase a load of firewood and want to use it immediately, without drying it for several months to a year, be sure some of it is ash.
ReplyDeleteWe heat with wood and ash is one of our favorite woods to get!
ReplyDeleteYour blog has been chosen for the weekly OBS Bloggers Spotlight column, you should have an email from me with a few questions!
Thanks!
Old time moonshiners song.
ReplyDeleteBuild you a fire with Hickory, Hickory ASH and Oak.
Don't use no green or rotten wood
They'll get you by the smoke
Others have uses for ASH firewood.
What is the occasion that you would have all these posts up? I haven't seen this much out of you for a long time. Well done!
